EARLY HIKES
One of the primary reasons for the founding of the Tramp & Trail Club of Utica was to do simple nature hikes, and they were done frequently. However, just walking did not long satisfy the early Tramps. So, they occasionally did much more interesting and challenging hikes, such as: Endurance Hike (30+ miles), Sunrise Hike, Mystery Hike, Compass Hike (pre-GPS), Gastronomic Hike, All Night Hike (midnight start), Bird Hunt, Flower Hunt, Geological Hike, Treasure Hunt (pre-geocaching), Historical Hike, Caving, Canoe Hike, Ski and Snowshoe Hikes, New Year’s Hike, Bike Hike, and Mountain Climbing in the Adirondacks, Catskills, Green, and White mountains. Distances ranged from half-day (10-12 miles) to weeks, when sometimes a cook was hired. Then, as today, the comradery and friendly spirit of the Club prevailed, whatever the type of hike.
