On Saturday October 21st, six conscientious Tramps were treated to a fine fall hike of just under 6 miles over a good portion of the DEC Carpenter Road Cross-Country ski trails. The club has helped to maintain these trails dating back into the 1980s. It quickly became apparent that a DEC crew had recently traveled the trails, removed blow downs and cleared much of the fallen material we would normally deal with . Their fine work allowed us to mainly concentrate on trimming back overhanging branches that will be face high when the snow on the trail is much deeper.
The weather gods blessed us with a window of essentially rain-free hiking despite a drizzle occurring before and then immediately after the hike ended.
If you’re looking for snow this winter to either cross-country ski or snowshoe on, Carpenter Road is one of the most reliable spots in the area. Even with the minimal amount of snow received last winter, I skied Carpenter Road all the way to April 1st.
