On a perfect fall day, 23 Tramps were treated to a guided hike in the Shawangunk Nature Preserve. The Preserve was founded in 1974 when Tim and Peg Spencer Behrendt bought 3.5 acres on Shawangunk Road in Cold Brook, N.Y. It has grown to a 516 acre Deep Ecology Learning Center and Preserve. The public is invited to use their trails at any time. Their dream was to protect the land and all life forms on it and enable them to live with minimal human impact. Besides leading us on the hike, parts of which border the Black Creek, Peg also took us to their original homestead which they built using discarded lumber and windows. It is still used during warmer times of the year.
Besides, enjoying nature and the woodland, it gave us insights into how to live a different lifestyle.
