The First Hike

The First Hike

The T&T Club was officially organized with 23 “original” members, 11 women and 12 men, in late April of 1921. You only had to sign up before the 1st hike to be considered an “original” member. The 1st hike was held on April 30, 1921, led by newly elected 1st secretary, Abigail Dimon. The attendance was 17 hikers, 11 women and 6 men. The hike started at 12:30 pm at the upper end of Elm St. and went into Roscoe Conkling Park and over the hill to Cascade Glen (Valley View golf course did not open until 1927). It was a cool, cloudy and damp day, but they had fun venturing up and down the gorge, identifying many flowers and 7 types of birds. Someone brought some goodies which were shared and enjoyed by all – the birth of a tradition. They hiked 5 to 6 miles and got back about 6 pm. Abigail Dimon drew a pen and ink sketch of the hike and issued a full report.
Howard Robbins snapped a picture of the group.
